Frequently Asked Questions

+ Why does my rider have to start in a private lesson?

Our emphasis is on safety and proper technique, both when riding and when working around the horses. Anyone just starting out needs the one on one attention from an experienced instructor to learn the necessary steps and safety procedures. Riders must be able to halt, walk, trot (at a sitting, posting, and two point), and guide around obstacles before being eligible to join a group. Much in the same way new drivers learn in an empty parking lot before getting on the highway.

+ What do I need to bring to my first lesson?

Riders need to come prepared with an Ovation Riding Helmet, Paddock Boots, Bootcut riding pants, and gloves. See the links below for options. Proper equipment is essential for safety and comfort of our riders.

During the winter months please wear layers, being sure your top layer is a zip up and can be easily removed mid lesson.

DO NOT WEAR:

  • Spaghetti strap tank tops
  • Shorts
  • Sandals and other open toed shoes
  • Jeans with bling or embellishments on the back pockets #savethesaddles

+ Are there weight restrictions?

We follow the veterinary recommendations on weight limits for horses. Riders must be under 200 lbs, please specify when making your appointment as we will need to be sure that certain horses are available at your requested date and time.

Riders must also be able to mount their horse unassisted and balance in a seated position once on.

Please call if you have any questions regarding weight limits.

+ What is proper riding attire?

Riders who have proper clothing will find it easier to maintain their position with increased comfort.

Paddock Boots: These are black leather boots that come up to ankle height. They can be zip up, lace up, or pull on. They can be bought in a variety of places online, including Amazon and Zappos.

Kentucky Jodphurs/Bootcut Breeches: These pants go over the boots and have a knee patch that helps prevent rubs and increases grip. Black is preferred though other colors are allowed. We recommend the following brands:

Every style of riding is different, please note that we do not recommend the legging style tan pants.

Black Helmet: A well fitting helmet is essential for safety. We require the Ovation Deluxe Schooler in black.

Gloves: To help riders maintain a good grip on the reins. Any type of riding glove will work, we recommend having a lightweight pair for summer and an insulated pair for winter. These will have additional grip in between the fingers.

Summit Stables Apparel: Order coats, polos, pullovers, zip ups, hats and other apparel here!

To order, go to the "Barns/Resources" tab, Barns/Farms Group 2, and you will see our Summit Stables Page. Please follow the directions for ordering.

If your rider is attending our equine events outside of the farm (ex pony rides, school demonstrations, horse shows etc) we request that they wear their Summit Stables Apparel.

+ What is the cancellation policy? What about severe weather?

We understand that sometimes life can be unpredictable. We ask that a 12 hour notice be given for all cancelled lessons. Lessons can be made up anytime during the semester. Lessons must be used in the semester they are purchased. In the event that the weather is too severe for everyone to safely travel to and from the barn or for our horses to ride in we will contact you about rescheduling.

+ I found cheaper lessons at another farm, why are yours more expensive?

Riding is truly a sport of "you get what you pay for". Our prices are in line with other top notch programs. We offer a high quality product and focus on the safety and skill development of all students. This means smaller groups, horses that have been professionally trained for novice riders, and experienced certified instructors. This will allow for a significant amount of growth, both in riding and working around the horses.

If you do find lessons and camps for significantly less we recommend that you ask the following questions:

  • How experienced is the instructor?
  • What certifications do they have to be teaching your child?
  • Can they provide proof of insurance (both for themselves and the facility) carried by a top provider?
  • What is the rider to instructor ratio? Is there room for my rider to grow and improve at this facility?
  • Is the facility clean, well maintained and compliant with all safety codes?
  • Do they offer both indoor and outdoor facilities?
  • Are the stalls clean? Are the barn and riding arenas well lit?
  • Do the horses look healthy? Are their feet in good shape?
  • What training have they had to ensure that they will take care of a novice rider?
  • Are the horses being over used in many daily lessons?

Here at Summit Stables, we pride ourselves on knowing we provide the best value for your investment.

+ Do I need to buy a horse?

Not unless you want to! We have safe lesson horses available for riders and intermediate horses for when they are ready for a bit more of a challenge. Riders can even show these farm owned horses in local competitions in the Academy Division.

Once riders are ready to step up that is a discussion your trainer will have with all parties and we can help select the perfect horse to continue your journey.
